RICHMOND, Va., Oct. 17, 2012 – James Madison field hockey freshman goalkeeper Lena Wimmert (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany/Lise-Meitner Gymnasium) has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday.
Wimmert spurred JMU to a 1-1 record against a pair of non-conference foes last weekend. She limited opponents to just one goal in 140 minutes of actions and stopped 10 of the 11 shots she faced. The rookie started her week with a 4-0 shutout of Radford. It was her fourth shutout of the season, the most by a JMU freshman since Kelsey Cutchins (2006-09) had five in 2006. Against Duke on Friday, Wimmert turned aside 10 shots in a 1-0 loss.
For the week, the Dukes’ goalkeeper posted a 0.50 goals against average and a .909 save percentage. This season she is 8-6 with a 1.10 goals against average and a .816 save percentage. She ranks in the top 10 nationally in both categories.
Hofstra’s Kaitlyn De Turo was the league’s Player of the Week.
Madison returns to play this weekend as it hosts William and Mary and No. 9 Old Dominion at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.
