HARRISONBURG, Va., June 20, 2012 – With the United States Field Hockey team preparing for the 2012 Olympic Games, the youth U.S. futures program is hosting two developmental tournaments in Virginia. Several members of the James Madison field hockey program are taking part in those tournaments.

Head coach Antoinette Lucas and Associate Head Coach Lynn Farquhar are involved with coaching the Futures Elite Program while incoming freshmen Erika Bienlien (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and Kristen Reitano (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) are competing in the National Futures Championship.

The National Futures Championship is the premier event for the Futures program. It serves as a selection event for USA Field Hockey and is the foundation of the Olympic pipeline system. Athletes are talent identified by USA Field Hockey staff and are considered to be the top 13-percent of the athlete pool.

The Futures Elite Program is a tournament structured as a High Performance competition, with all the experiences surrounding an international style tournament. It will simulate a six-nation competition with a round-robin event followed by a final and ranking matches.

Bienlien and Reitano’s team is currently in a four-game series with world No. 1 Argentina. The teams tied the opening game 1-1 on June 18 at the University of Virginia. The second and third match will be played June 20-21 at Old Dominion University with the finale being held June 23 at 1:30 p.m. at the National Training Center.
