Four Field Hockey Players Honored on National Academic Squad

HARRISONBURG, Va., March 5, 2012 – Four James Madison field hockey players were honored on Monday as part of the Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I Academic Squad. The National Field Hockey Coaches Association Academic Squad honors those student-athletes that who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher throughout the first semester of the 2011-12 academic year. 

The four Dukes to earn the national honor were senior back Lindsay Cutchins (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland), junior midfielder Jenna Taylor (Midlothian, Va./James River), redshirt sophomore forward Rachel Wein (Perryville, Md./Perryville) and freshman forward Bethany Ashworth (Lititz, Pa./Warwick). 

Cutchins received the award for the second time in her career, also making the team in 2009 as a sophomore. She is a JMU Dean’s List and CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award recipient. 

Taylor adds the academic honor to her First Team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection from the 2011 season. She also received VaSID Second Team All-State and CAA Championship All-Tournament team honors this academic year. The rising senior was a JMU Dean’s List, JMU Athletic Director Scholar Athlete and CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award honoree in each of the past two years. 

Wein and Ashworth both made the NFHCA National Academic Squad for the first time in their careers. Both players made the Dean’s List and were CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award recipients in 2011.
