HARRISONBURG, Va., Dec. 12, 2011 – Two James Madison field hockey players were named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) 2011 University Division All-State squad as announced on Monday.
Junior midfielder Jenna Taylor (Midlothian, Va./James River) and sophomore back Amy Goldstein (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) were each named VaSID Second Team All-State in a vote of the state’s Sports Information Directors.
Taylor was a First Team All-CAA and CAA All-Tournament team selection in 2011. She started all 19 games at midfield for the Dukes and was tied for third on the team with three goals and was second on the squad with four assists for 10 points. She scored one game-winning goal and totaled 12 shots, eight of which were on goal.
Goldstein anchored the Dukes defense, starting all 19 games at central back. She helped limit opponents to 2.63 goals per game and a .182 shooting percentage. She scored one goal on 22 shots, including eight shots on net. She was second on the team with one defensive same and tied for second with one game-winning goal.
Taylor and Goldstein were two of 11 players from the Colonial Athletic Association voted All-State. Old Dominion swept all three individual awards and placed three players on the First Team. In total, the Monarchs had five players honored while Richmond had the second most selections with four. Virginia placed three honorees followed by JMU, William & Mary, VCU and Longwood with two each. Longwood and Liberty had one selection each.
Old Dominion’s Emma Batten added State Player of the Year to her 2011 CAA Player of the Year award while her teammate Kelsey Smither was named the State Rookie of the Year. Monarch head coach Beth Anders was named the State Coach of the Year.
