RICHMOND, Va., Sept. 27, 2011 – James Madison field hockey freshman forward Taylor West (Princess Anne, Md./Pocomoke) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week on Tuesday.
West scored three goals in helping JMU force Drexel into penalty strokes in its CAA opener. It was the first hat trick by a Duke since Dolores de Rooij (2007-10) completed the feat on Oct. 31, 2010 against Northeastern and was the first three-goal game by a Madison freshman since Tori Lindsey (2009-10) and Auburn Weisensale (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) each did it against Radford on Sept. 30, 2009.
This season, West leads the team with six goals and 13 points despite having played in just three games. She ranks third amongst current Dukes in career scoring.
After the opening weekend of CAA play, JMU is in a six-way tie for second with a 1-1 conference record. The Dukes fell to Drexel 4-3 in penalty strokes on Friday while edging Towson 1-0 on Sunday.
Old Dominion’s Maartje van Rijswijk was named the league’s Player of the Week after helping the top-ranked Monarchs get off to a 2-0 start in the CAA.
The Dukes return to action this weekend as they travel north for a pair of conference road games. They’ll take on Northeastern at 2 p.m. on Friday in Brookline, Mass., before traveling to Hempstead, N.Y. for a 1 p.m. game against Hofstra on Oct. 2.
