HARRISONBURG, Va., April 22, 2013 – James Madison field hockey’s Rachel Wein (Perryville, Md./Perryville) was a finalist for JMU’s 2012-13 Gary ’81 & Fredericka (Cookie) McCollum JMU Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.
The award winners and finalists were recognized Monday evening at the annual JMU student-athlete awards banquet.
Wein, a redshirt junior forward last fall, is a three-year letterwinner and two year starter on the field hockey team. She is a four-year member of the NFHCA National Academic Squad as well as a receiving JMU’s President’s List and JMU’s Dean List on multiple occasions. In addition, Wein has been a JMU Athletic Director Scholar Athlete and a winner of the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award. The political science major has a 3.82 GPA.
On the field, Wein was a Second Team NFHCA All-Region selection after leading the team with nine goals and 21 points in 19 games played. She earned Second Team All-Colonial Athletic Association accolades and was a member of the CAA All-Tournament team after leading all players with three goals and six points.
The women’s tennis team’s Katherine Bulling was the recipient of the McCollum Female Scholar Athlete of the Year Award. Women’s basketball’s Kirby Burkholder and cross country and track field’s Katie Gorman were the other finalist.
