HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept. 30, 2012 – Redshirt freshman forward Taylor West (Princess Anne, Md./Pocomoke) scored early in the first half and freshman goalkeeper Lena Wimmert (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany/Lise-Meitner Gymnasium) made seven saves to make it hold up as the James Madison field hockey team shut out Hofstra, 1-0, at the JMU Field Hockey Complex on Sunday afternoon.
JMU won for the second time in its last three games to improve to 7-4 on the season and 2-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Hofstra lost its fourth straight to drop to 5-7 and 0-3 in league play.
“Certainly we are always happy with a win,” field hockey head coach Antoinette Lucas said. “We have an off week coming up and I think it’s a good thing that we do. We have some things to work on. To be outshot the way we were today is inexcusable, so we have work to do.”
West paced the Dukes with a goal on her only shot of the game. It was her team-leading fifth goal of the season and her fourth game-winning goal of the year. Freshman midfielder Saskia Chelmowski (Berlin, Germany/Gustav-Heinemann-Cherschule) added an assist while senior midfielder Auburn Weisensale (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and sophomore forward Bethany Ashworth (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) added one shot each.
Forward Lauren Del Valle led all players with three shots on goal while midfielders Micaela Gallagher and Charlotte Loehr contributed three shots each, but both had just one reach net.
Wimmert improved to 7-4 on the season with her third shutout of the season. She made seven saves in 70 minutes of action to lower her goals against average to 1.21. Freshman defender Adrienne le Vatte (Port Elizabeth, South Africa/Alexander Road) added her first career defensive save for the Dukes.
Kaitlyn De Turo took the loss for the Pride, dropping to 5-7 on the season. She allowed one goal and made two saves in 70 minutes of play.
HU outshot Madison 16-3 in the game and had a 6-0 advantage in penalty corners. JMU led in saves 8-2.
West tallied the game’s only goal 9:13 into the first half. Chelmowski intercepted a pass in the midfield and dribbled the ball down the right side. She advanced into the scoring area and set a centering pass to West who knocked it by De Turo.
JMU returns to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 9 as it host Radford at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.
