CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Feb. 15, 2014 – The James Madison swimming and diving team won a pair of relays on Saturday, allowing it to move up one place and finish second at the Cavalier Invitational at the UVA Aquatics and Fitness Center in Charlottesville, Va., Saturday.
Madison finished with 466 points to finish 114 points shy of first-place Virginia (580 points). Pennsylvania claimed third with 445 points with William & Mary (369 points) taking fourth and Duke (147 points) in fifth.
The first win for JMU came in the 200-yard medley relay. The Dukes’ “A-Team: completed the relay in a time of 1:45.79 to claim 40 points. JMU closed the day with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay, touching the wall in a time of 3:28.92 to collect another 40 points.
Freshman Maddy Murphy (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) was the top individual finisher on the day for the Dukes. She placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke by completing the trek in 2:21.15. Freshman Emma Richer (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) was right behind her fellow rookie, placing third with a time of 2:22.13.
Sophomore Ashley Clark (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) picked up 15 points for the JMU in the 100-yard butterfly. She finished in fourth by touching the wall at 56.13.
Junior Aimee Hooper (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) poured in 12 points for JMU in the 200-yard freestyle. She claimed seventh with a time of 1:55.39. Freshman Claire Adkins (Martinsville, Va./Carlisle) won the “B” Final with a time of 1:54.22.
Adkins matched Murphy for the top individual finisher for Madison by claiming second in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:38.60.
Next up for Madison is a trip to College Park, Md., to compete in the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association Championships. The championships get under way on Wednesday, Feb. 26 and run through Saturday, Mar. 1.
