POWELLS POINT, N.C. – The James Madison University men’s golf team improved its second round score and went under par for the day to move up to eighth through 36 holes of the 2013 Old Dominion/OBX Collegiate, Oct. 21. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at Kilmarlic Golf Club (Par 71 – 6,550 yards) in Powells Point, N.C.
With all five players improving from the first to the second round, the Dukes sliced 17 shots off their first round score to shoot a 1-under 283 and move up two spots to eighth at 15-over 583. Madison was one of five teams of the 18-team field that went under par in the second round. Hartford shot a tournament low 7-under 277 and take the lead at 1-under 567, two shots ahead of Elon at 1-over 569. Marshall is in third at 2-over 720, with VCU in fourth at 4-over 572 and Radford rounding out the top five teams at 7-over 573.
Junior Jon Weiss (Florence, S.C./Sumter (Newberry)) and junior Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) are tied for 12th at 1-over 143 for the two rounds. Weiss had an even-par 71 in the second round, while Smith shot a team-low 3-under 68 in the second 18. Freshman Ryan Cole (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) is tied for 18th after his 1-under 70 moved him up with a 36-hole total of 2-over 144. next at 3-over 74 in a tie for 30th,with one shot back at 4-over 75, tied for 35th. Freshman Poom Pattaropong (Minburi, Bangkok, Thailand/Heritage Academy (S.C.)) improved six shots in his second round with a 3-over 74 and is tied for 72nd at 12-over 154. Sophomore Chris Kapsak (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) completed the Madison effort at 13-over 155, tied for 74th. Marshall’s Logan Lagodich shot a 4-under 67 to post a 6-under 136 and extend his lead to two shots over Old Dominion’s Jamison Randall and Rocky Khara of VCU at 4-under 138. In all, 10 individuals are under par through 36 holes of the tournament.
The final round will start at 8:30 a.m., with teams going off with tee times from the No. 1 and 10 tees.
