BLACKSBURG, Va., Sept. 28, 2013 – Sophomore Cara Wirth (Reading, Pa./Wilson High School) earned a berth in the Flight ‘C’ Singles title match to lead James Madison women’s tennis on day two of the three-day Hokie Fall Invite.
Wirth defeated teammate redshirt-junior Sarah Khan (Islamabad, Pakistan/Overseas Pakistani Foundation College (New Mexico)) 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinal round of Flight ‘C’ singles to move on to tomorrow’s championship match against Liberty’s Brittany Yang.
Freshmen Rachel Nelson (Big Prairie, Ohio/West Holmes) and Emily Bradshaw (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada/Blyth Academy) competed against one another in a Flight ‘B’ singles consolation match-up, with Nelson tallying the two-set win (6-4, 6-2). In another consolation match, senior Jacqueline Palmucci’s (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail) comeback bid against Pittsburgh’s Katherine Castro came up short as she fell in three sets (6-0, 6-7(3), 1-0(4)).
Nelson and Khan advanced to the consolation finals in Flight ‘A’ doubles following a bye through the quarterfinal round and a hard-fought 8-7(2) victory over Radford’s Taylor Newman and Gemma Valls. On the same side of the bracket, Palmucci and Bradshaw fell 8-5 to Liberty’s Brittany Yang and Mariely Hassey in the consolation quarterfinals before dropping a second consolation match to Newman and Valls.
On the championship side of Flight ‘A’ doubles, freshman Alex Huie (Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands) and junior Taylor Pinchoff (Sylvan Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) took down Virginia Tech’s Tea Ivanovic and Isel Martinez-Marcos 8-5 in the quarterfinal round. The JMU pair then lost 8-3 in the semifinals to VCU’s Olga Barscheuskaya and Daria Yakauleva.
Huie fell in her Flight ‘A’ singles consolation match to Marshall’s Kai Broomfield in the decisive third set. After falling behind 6-2 in set one, she battled back for a 6-3 win in set two but was unable to overcome Broomfield in set three and fell 1-0(4). Pinchoff withdrew from her consolation match with Liberty’s Belen Rivera in Flight ‘A’ singles due to illness.
Wirth and senior Ruxandra Andriescu (Brampton, Ontario, Canada/Turner Fenton) were defeated by Castro and Lolade Ogungbesan (Pitt) 8-6 in Flight ‘B’ doubles. Later in the day, Andriescu withdrew from her Flight ‘C’ singles match because of an illness.
The Dukes will wrap up the Hokie Fall Invite on Sunday in Blacksburg, Va. Competition begins at 9 a.m.
