Women's Golf Places Third at Golfweek Program Challenge

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – James Madison women’s golf team slipped one spot and finished third at the 2013 Golfweek Program Challenge, Sept. 8-10. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club (Par 71 – 6,038 yards) in Pawleys Island, S.C.

JMU was unable to follow yesterday’s round with the same score but still managed to post the fourth-best score of the day with a 13-over 297 to finish at 31-over 883. Campbell led from start to finish, with a 54-hole total of 10-over 862, 17 shots better than runner-up Jacksonville State and 21 shots better than the Dukes. Stetson was fourth at 35-over 887, with Old Dominion rounding out the top five teams at 38-over 890.

Senior Ginger Mak (North Point, Hong Kong/The International School of Macao) finished in a tie for second at 2-over 215, tying with Jacksonville State’s Anne Kathrin Albrecht and Alexandra Prazak of Campbell, four shots behind Campbell’s Tahnia Ravnjak at 2-under 211 after a final round 5-under 66. Mak shot a 4-over 75 in the final round as she managed just one birdie and five bogeys.

Junior Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield) was next in a tie for 17th at 10-over 223 following a final round of 6-over 77. Sophomore Karishma Thiagaraj (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) was next for the Dukes after a team final-round best 1-over 72 to move up to a tie for 25th with freshman Nicola Haynes (Newcastle-Upon-Tyle, England), who had a 2-over 73 in the last 18, at 14-over 227. Junior Nikola Wessels (Muenster, Germany/Marienschule Muenster) completed the team scoring in a tie for 29th at 15-over 228.

JMU will compete in its second-straight Golfweek-sponsored event, playing in the Golfweek Conference Challenge, Mon.-Wed., Sept. 23-25. The 54-hole tournament will be played at Red Sky Ranch & Golf Club in Wolcott, Colo.
