Women's Golf Ties for Third at John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. – The James Madison University women’s golf team moved up one spot and tied for third at the 2013 John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate, March 25. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Georgia State University, was played at Eagle’s Landing Country Club (Par 72 – 6,139 yards) in Stockbridge, Ga., just outside of Atlanta.

Battling still breezy and chilly conditions, the scoring average for the field remained above 82 in the final round, as not a single hole played under par. JMU shot a 26-over 314 in the final round to finish at 81-over 945 in a tie with host Georgia State. Kent State shot a tournament low 14-over 302 to take home the team title with a 54-hole score of 67-over 931, 11 shots better than runner-up Old Dominion at 78-over 942. Samford wrapped up the top five teams at 96-over 960.

JMU was led by sophomore Maria Andrea Legaspi, who had her top collegiate finish, shooting a 5-over 77 in the last round to place third at 13-over 229. Freshman Karishma Thiagaraj also had a top-15 placing by tying for 12th at 22-over 238, while sophomore Shabril Brewer is tied for 22nd at 24-over 240. Sophomore Nikola Wessels was next in a tie for 28th at 26-over 242, while junior Ginger Mak rounded out Madison’s scoring players at 28-over 244, tying for 33rd. Playing as an individual, freshman Rachel Walker was 71st at 53-over 269. Old Dominion’s Kimberly Bradbury, the second-round leader by six shots, held on for a three-shot victory at 7-over 223 over Kent State’s Jennifer Ha, who shot a final-round 1-under 71 in the tough conditions. She was the low round of the tournament.

Madison will return to the course on Mon.-Tue., April 1-2, as the Dukes travel to Pinehurst Resort #6 in Pinehurst, N.C., for the 2013 Pinehurst Challenge.
