HARRISONBURG, Va., Feb. 26, 2013 – For the first time in school history, the James Madison softball team appeared in a national Top 25 poll. JMU received a single vote in the NFCA/USA Today Top 25 poll when it was announced on Tuesday.
Additionally, the Dukes had two freshmen garner weekly conference honors as announced by the Colonial Athletic Association on Tuesday. Catcher Erica Field (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) was named the CAA Player of the Week and pitcher/first baseman Jailyn Ford (Hot Springs, Va./Bath County) claimed the conference’s Rookie of the Week accolade.
Field was named Player of the Week after helping JMU to a 3-2 record at last weekend’s NFCA Leadoff Classic. She was named to the All-Tournament team after hitting .533 (8-for-15) with two doubles and three RBIs. Field added two runs scored, a walk, a sacrifice fly and two steals during the three-day tournament. The rookie has hit safely in all 10 games this season and is hitting .485 with a team-best 10 RBIs on the year.
Ford received CAA Rookie of the Week honors after being named the conference’s Pitcher of the Week last week. She contributed both in the circle and at the plate for Madison at last weekend’s NFCA Leadoff Classic. Ford went 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA and eight strikeouts as a pitcher and contributed a .400 batting average with three doubles and three RBIs in the batter’s box. In JMU’s 1-0 win over No. 14 South Florida, Ford pitched a two-hit shutout and drove in the game’s only run to spark the Dukes. It was her third shutout of the season.
Joining Field and Ford in the CAA’s Weekly Honors was Georgia State’s Kaitlyn Medlam. Medlam was named the conference’s Pitcher of the Week.
The Dukes return to action this weekend in Orlando, Fla., for the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic. JMU squares off with Pittsburgh, the College of Charleston, Illinois State, No. 14/14 Michigan and No. 10/12 Oregon during the three-day tournament.
