RICHMOND, Va., Feb. 19, 2013 – After a dominating debut performance at last weekend’s College of Charleston Cougar Classic, James Madison softball freshman left-hander Jailyn Ford (Hot Springs, Va./Bath County) has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week.
Ford helped JMU get off to a 4-1 start on the season, contributing both in the circle and at the plate for her team. In the circle, she went 2-0 with a pair of shutouts in 13 innings pitched. Opponents hit just .119 off the rookie with five hits and five walks while striking out 19 times.
Ford started her season with a 6-0 win over the College of Charleston. Her debut included limiting the Cougars to four hits and three walks, while striking out six in seven innings. Her next trip to the circle was against Syracuse on Sunday. Ford did not allow her only hit until there were two outs in the sixth inning, missing a no-hitter by one batter. She tied a JMU freshman record with 13 strikeouts and was just two punchouts shy of the overall school record.
At the plate, Ford went 6-for-16 with two home runs, a double, three runs scored and a team-high seven RBIs. She set a new freshman record with five RBIs in the Dukes’ win over Charleston, going 2-for-4 with two home runs.
In addition to the weekly CAA honor, Ford was named to the CollegeSoftball360.com Primetime Performer of the Week Honor Roll on Tuesday.
Georgia State’s Paige Nowacki earned CAA Player of the Week accolades and Hofstra’s Caryn Bailey claimed Rookie of the Week honors.
Madison returns to action this weekend at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla. JMU faces DePaul, UC Davis, Indiana, #17 South Florida and #12 Louisiana-Lafayette in the three-day tournament.
