JMU Women's Basketball's Evans Selected State Player of the Year

NORFOLK, Va., April 6, 2011 - James Madison senior guard Dawn Evans (Clarksville, Tenn.) has been selected as Virginia women's basketball Player of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID).

Evans was joined on the 2011 All-State First Team by senior teammate Lauren Jimenez (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen).  Evans won All-State First Team recognition for the third time, while Jimenez was a first-time honoree.

Evans ranked third in the nation in scoring (23.1 ppg) during the 2010-11 season.  The Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year ended her collegiate career as both the leading all-time scorer at JMU and in the Colonial Athletic Association with 2,667 points.  She was named Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention and Women's Basketball Coaches Association State Farm All-America Honorable Mention.  The senior led the Dukes to a 26-8 record, including a 16-2 mark in the CAA, while guiding JMU to the CAA Tournament title and to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year.

Jimenez was the Dukes' top rebounder (8.5) and second-leading scorer (14.1) and received All-CAA Second Team recognition this season.

Hampton head coach David Six was selected the Coach of the Year, and Virginia guard Ataira Franklin was picked as the Rookie of the Year.

Six led Hampton to a 25-7 overall record en route to being named the Mid Eastern Athletic Confernce Coach of the Year.  His team posted a 15-1 conference mark and won both the MEAC regular-season and tournament titles.

Franklin, a 5-11 freshman from Bowie, Md., averaged 9.3 points and 4.2 rebounds while starting 26 games for Virginia.
