OXON HILL, Md., March 9, 2011 -- James Madison University senior point guard Dawn Evans (Clarksville, Tenn./Northeast) has been selected the women's basketball Player of the Year in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Evans was also named to the All-CAA First Team, and Dukes' senior center Lauren Jimenez (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) was voted to the All-CAA Second Team.

The CAA honors were announced Wednesday night at a banquet on the eve of the first round of the CAA Tournament, which begins Thursday at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.

The league's honorees were selected by a vote of the conference's head women's basketball coaches.

Evans leads the league and ranks second nationally in scoring average (23.6), and last week she became the CAA all-time scoring leader.  She enters the CAA Tournament with a league-record 2,589 career points.

Jimenez is the Dukes' top rebounder (8.0 avg.) and second-leading scorer (14.4).  She is tied for fifth in the league in rebounding and ranks seventh in scoring.

Evans won All-CAA First-Team honors for the third time.  Jimenez was named All-CAA for the first time.

Evans is the third JMU player coached by Kenny Brooks to win the CAA's top women's basketball honor.  Meredith Alexis (2007) and Tamera Young (2008) also were named league Player of the Year.  In school history a JMU player has won the award five times.  starting with Sydney Beasley in 1987 and 1988.

Two Dukes were recognized for academic achievement.  Redshirt junior forward Lauren Whitehurst (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) was named to the CAA All-Academic Second Team, and senior forward/center Jalissa Taylor (Chesterfield, Va./L.C. Bird) earned CAA All-Academic Honorable Mention.
