QUINNIPIAC SCOUTING REPORT
♦ The Bobcats are the 2012 preseason coaches' pick to win the Northeast
Conference over Sacred Heart, the defending league champion, and Monmouth, the
team that defeated Quinnipiac in the semifinals of the NEC tournament. Last year, Quinnipiac went 13-5 in conference
and 22-10 overall, going 12-3 on the road and 4-2 when traveling to see a
non-conference opponent. They clinched a
berth in the first round of the WNIT Tournament, but lost to Temple, 60-75.
♦ QU will see 12 members of last year's team return to the court, including
four starters from the 2011-12 line-up.
Senior guard Felicia Barron, preseason All-NEC and 2012 NEC Defensive
Player of the Year, will look to lead the charge as she averaged a team-high
16.5 points per game last season. Barron
also averaged 4.2 steals per game, the second-best average among players at the
NCAA Division I level last year. She
posted five of those steals against the Dukes in last year's match-up in
Hamden, Conn.
♦ Junior forwards Camryn Warner and Brittany McQuain will also return to keep
the Bobcats' defense solid. Warner led
the team with 42 blocks, making her fourth all-time in the Division I-era
record books at Quinnipiac. McQuain was
the team leader in rebounding, pulling down 303 boards for the Bobcats for an
average of 9.5 per game in 2011-12. She
also put up a double-digit scoring average (10.2 ppg) for the year, making her
a threat on both ends of the court.
JMU FAST BREAK
♦ The Dukes return four starters from the 2011-12 WNIT runner-up squad. Last season, JMU went 29-8 overall and 14-4
in conference play, boasting a 16-2 home record for the year.
♦ As a team, Madison blocked 172 shots from opponents last season and tallied
1,674 rebounds, both new school records.
Senior guard/forward Nikki Newman,
who accounted for 52 of those denials and averaged a team-leading 7.8 rebounds
per game, returns to the lineup as the reigning Colonial Athletic Association
Defensive Player of the Year. Newman,
currently sixth in all-time career blocked shots for JMU (106), needs eight
blocks to take fourth place and just 14 for sole possession of second
place. Hollee Franklin (98-02) is the all-time JMU leader for blocked
shots with 186.
♦ Senior guard Tarik Hislop and junior
guard Kirby Burkholder each averaged
double-digit point production during their All-CAA season, dropping 14.8 ppg
and 11.5 ppg, respectively in 2011-12.
Hislop led the squad in made field goals while Burkholder preferred
making her shots from beyond the arc. In
the Dukes' season opener at Virginia, Burkholder dropped a career-high seven
3-pointers en-route to a 25 point scoring performance. She now has 98 3-pointers in her career,
moving her into a tie for 10th place all-time at JMU with Paula Schuler (87-91) and needs four more to take sole possession of
ninth place.
