HARRISONBURG, Va., April 23, 2012 - The Fourth Annual JMU Athletics Recognition Banquet will be held this evening at the JMU Festival & Student Conference Center. The dinner event will showcase the many athletic and academic accomplishments attained by JMU's varsity sports teams, student-athletes, coaches and administrators from the spring of 2011, fall of 2011 and winter of 2011-12.
The evening will be topped off by honoring the Male and Female Gary '81 and Fredericka (Cookie) McCollum Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards and the Male and Female Athlete of the Year Awards.
The program is a celebration for all of JMU Athletics. In addition to the major awards, other outstanding accomplishments such as team champions, coaches and players of the year, scholar-athletes, and members of all-conference, all-region and All-America squads will honored.
The 2011-12 Exemplary Community Service Award winner will be announced. Seven teams submitted nominations for this year's award which brings to light the community involvement in Harrisonburg, Rockingham County and beyond by JMU teams.
Members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, "SAAC", will be formally recognized and thanked for their service to their peers and to the program overall.
This year's student-athlete speaker will be senior Nicole Jotso of the swimming and diving team.
The JMU senior student-athletes will be honored, and they will receive a diploma frame, the last of their four varsity awards. The other varsity awards, which are received in the fall of the year beginning as a sophomore, include a JMU letter jacket, ring and blanket.
The program will start with dinner at 6:30 p.m. Doors will open at 5:45 p.m.
