TUCSON, Ariz. – The James Madison University men’s golf team is currently eighth through 36 holes of its spring opener, the 2014 Arizona Intercollegiate, Jan. 27. The two-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at Sewailo Golf Club (Par 71 – 7,262 yards) in Tucson, Ariz.
Under sunny skies and good weather, Madison posted a 14-over 298 in the opening round and sat in ninth and then followed it up again with a 298 but moved up a spot into eighth at 28-over 596. Southern Cal is the 36-hole leader at 4-under 564, with Pac-12 foe California two shots back in second at 2-under 566. New Mexico is third at 12-over 580, with host Arizona and Brigham Young tied for fourth at 13-over 581.
Junior Jon Weiss (Florence, S.C./Sumter (Newberry)) lead for the Dukes after a 1-under 70 in the afternoon round put him at 2-over 144 for the tournament in a tie for 10th. Freshmen Ryan Cole (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) and Poom Pattaropong (Minburi, Bangkok, Thailand/Heritage Academy (S.C.)) are next for the Dukes at 8-over 150 in a tie for 32nd. Junior Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) is tied for 48th at 10-over 152, with sophomore Chris Kapsak (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) one shot back at 11-over 153, tied for 50th. Anthony Paolucci of Southern Cal is the two-round individual leader at 7-under 135, two shots ahead of Cal’s Brandon Hagy at 5-under 137 in second.
The final round will be an 8 a.m. shotgun start, with JMU playing with New Mexico State and Cal State Fullerton going off holes five through eight.
