LEXINGTON, Ky., Dec. 10, 2013 – After collecting over 300 kills and 150 blocks and being named a First Team All-Colonial Athletic Association performer, James Madison junior middle blocker Lizzy Briones (Siloam Springs, Ark./Siloam Springs) added American Volleyball Coaches Association All-East Coast Region Honorable Mention honors on Tuesday.

Briones is the first Duke to earn All-Region accolades since Jena Pierson (2004-07) and Allyson Halls (2004-07) earned Honorable Mentions in 2006. The junior from Siloam Springs, Ark., finished the season with 308 kills on .285 hitting, adding 154 blocks, 89 digs, 16 service aces and 10 assists. She was the only player in the Colonial Athletic Association with more than 300 kills and 100 blocks, helping her earn First Team All-CAA honors for the first time in her career.

Briones’ 154 blocks is the second-highest single-season total in school history and her 133 blocks assists and 1.387 blocks per set also rank second in program history for a single season. Those totals also helped the middle blocker climb up JMU’s career lists, ranking fifth in school history in block assists (297), ninth in total blocks (345) and second in block average (1.06/set).

In 2013, Briones had 10 or more blocks five times, including a career-best 11 in back-to-back matches against Northeastern and Hofstra. She also set a career high with 24 kills in JMU’s opening match of the season against Hofstra.

The Dukes went 13-15 on the season with an 8-6 mark in the CAA. They finished tied for third in the conference and earned the fourth-seed in the CAA tournament.

Three other CAA student-athletes earned AVCA All-Region nods on Tuesday. Northeastern libero Natalia Skiba was named to the All-East Region Team, while the College of Charleston’s outside hitter Darcy Dorton earned All-East Coast Region honors. Dorton’s teammate, right side Sloane White joined Briones amongst the All-East Coast honorable mentions.
