CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Oct. 6, 2013 – Sophomore Maxi Branth (Stockholm, Sweden/Tullinge Gymnasium) placed fifth with a win in his final match of the weekend as the James Madison men’s tennis team wrapped up play in the UVA Fall Classic on Sunday. Freshmen Mason Smith (Norfolk, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate School) and Niels Kathol (Bonn, Germany/Collegium Josephinum Bonn) also ended play on a positive note with wins in singles competition.
Branth, the fourth seed in the Gold Singles draw, was the highest-placing player for the Dukes, earning his fifth-place showing in a 16-man bracket. He ended the tournament with a thrilling three-set match, beating William & Mary’s John Banks 6-3, 4-6, 11-9. He improved to 5-2 during the fall season.
Smith picked up his first career singles win, topping Radford’s Daniel Myers 6-4, 6-3. Kathol finished 2-2 at the tournament following his 6-1, 6-3 win over Longwood’s Bharani Samkar.
Next up for the Dukes is the ITA Atlantic Regionals, held in Blacksburg, Va. from Oct. 17-22.
