RICHMOND, Va., March 19, 2013 - Senior Katherine Bulling (Loveland, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) was honored as the women's tennis Co-Player of the Week by the Colonial Athletic Association Tuesday afternoon, her first of the season and the second week in a row a James Madison women's tennis player has earned the honor.
Bulling notched a three-set victory over Georgetown's Sophie Panerese at the No. 4 singles position on March 15 to help the Dukes win 5-2 over the Hoyas. Bulling jumped out to a one-set lead following a 6-4 victory, but Panerese knotted the match when she grabbed a 6-4 win of her own in set two. In the decisive set three, Bulling dropped Panerese 6-3 to take the point and win her fourth straight match. She is now 7-1 in single duals this spring.
In doubles competition, Bulling paired with freshman Cara Wirth (Reading, Pa./Wilson) to clinch the doubles point for JMU against Georgetown. The duo defeated Liz Hamlin and Madeline Jaeger 8-5 at the No. 2 position. Last week, Wirth was named the CAA women's tennis Co-Player of the Week.
JMU returns to the courts March 23 for the first home match of the season. The Dukes play UMBC at 2 p.m. this coming Saturday.
