HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 26, 2012 -- James Madison freshman Kelly Kerrigan (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) scored the game-winning goal to help lead the Dukes' women's soccer team (2-1-0) to a 2-0 win over Temple (0-2-1) in Sunday's second round of the JMU/Fairfield Inn by Marriott Invitational Tournament at University Park.
In the day's first game, Georgetown (4-0-0) remained unbeaten with a 2-1 win over previously undefeated Hofstra (2-1-0).
The JMU-Temple game was scoreless for 70 minutes until the Dukes knocked in goals in the 71st and 73rd minutes.
Kerrigan took a pass from redshirt senior Kelly Germain (McLean, Va./Langley) and sent a shot from just inside the 18 to the right corner of the goal at 70:34.
Redshirt freshman Eileen Sechler (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) scored less than two minutes later, at 72:30, to push the JMU lead to 2-0. Sophomore Katie Hyland (Islip, N.Y./Islip) received a pass from Germain and sent a ball in from the right flank to Sechler.
JMU out-shot Temple 24-4, and redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Kate Courter (Lincoln Park, N.J./Immaculate Heart) made a single save to get the shutout. Owls redshirt senior goalkeeper Tara Murphy (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) stopped 12 shots.
In the day's first game, Georgetown junior Kaitlin Brenn (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) scored in the 16th minute to give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Jessica Clinton (Avon, Mass./Thayer Academy) sent a pass down the right side to Brenn, who knocked in a shot to the far corner of the goal from 12 yards out.
Hofstra junior goalkeeper Emily Morphitis (London, England/Therfield) thwarted a Hoya goal in the 51st minute when she saved a penalty kick by sophomore Daphne Corboz (Greenbrook, N.J./Watchung Hills). The PK was awarded after a Georgetown player was tackled from behind by a Hofstra defender.
The Hoyas upped their lead to 2-0 when a corner kick by Corboz sailed into the far corner of the goal in the 72nd minute.
Hofstra sophomore Sam Scolarici (Aldie, Va./Freedom) got the Pride on the scoreboard when she headed a cross from junior Amber Stobbs (London, England/Warlingham) into the goal in the 79th minute.
