PHILADELPHIA, Pa., Oct. 6, 2013 – Freshman Ashley Herndon (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) scored the game-winning goal for the second consecutive game, leading the James Madison women’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory at Drexel on Sunday afternoon.
The Dukes improved to 10-4 overall and 2-1 in the CAA with their seventh win in eight games. That is the program’s most overall victories through 14 games since the 2007 team started 12-1-1.
JMU and Drexel played even on the scoreboard well into the second half before Herndon broke a scoreless tie in the 76th minute. She received a cross from freshman Sydney Braun-McLeod (Ottawa, Ontario/Glebe Collegiate Institute) and finished to the left panel for her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Four of those five goals were game-winners.
Braun-McLeod tacked on an insurance goal in the 84th minute. The goalie came out to challenge, and Braun-McLeod was able to get behind her for the uncontested goal. She tallied four points in the team’s two games this week.
Sophomore goalie Ellen Forrest (Midlothian, Va./James River) made seven saves for her fourth shutout of the season. Drexel’s Eve Badana stopped five shots in a losing effort.
JMU finished with an advantage in shots (17-12) and corner kicks (4-3). Both teams registered seven shots on goal.
JMU will continue conference play with a home game against Towson on Sunday, Oct. 13, at 1 p.m. That game is the first of three consecutive home conference games for the Dukes.
