NEWARK, Del., Oct. 3, 2013 – Freshman Ashley Herndon (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) scored with 41 seconds left in regulation to give the James Madison women’s soccer team a 2-1 win at Delaware on Friday night, ending the Blue Hens’ six-game winning streak.
The Blue Hens (7-5, 1-1 CAA) held a 1-0 lead at the half thanks to a goal by Maddy Parker in the 30th minute. It was Parker’s first goal of the season and was assisted by Dianna Marinaro.
The Dukes (9-4, 1-1 CAA) tied the game at 1-1 with a goal by Becky Sparks (Laurel Springs, N.J./Paul VI) in the 74th minute. The senior fired a shot from 20 yards out that was too much for the goalie to handle, as it deflected off her hands and into the net. It was Sparks’ second goal of the season.
Herndon’s goal was also unassisted. She beat the goalie from 15 yards out to tally her third game-winning goal of the season. She is tied with junior Katie Hyland for the team lead in both goals (4) and points (11).
Sophomore goalie Ellen Forrest (Midlothian, Va./James River) made four saves and recorded her ninth win of the season. Jessica Levy stopped four shots for Delaware.
The Dukes entered Friday night’s game ranked fifth in the Mid-Atlantic Region by the NSCAA. They have won six of their last seven games.
JMU will stay on the road for another conference game when it travels to Drexel on Sunday. The game is scheduled to start at noon.
