HARRISONBURG,
Va., Dec. 19, 2012 -- James Madison women's soccer players Becky
Sparks (Laurel Springs, N.J./Paul VI) and Lauren
Wilson (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown) have been
named to the 2012 All-State Women's Soccer Team.
Sparks, a junior defender, was selected to the All-State First Team, while
Wilson, a junior forward, was named to the Second Team.
Sparks and Wilson are both two-time All-Colonial Athletic Association honorees.
Wilson was JMU's leading scorer with eight goals, while Sparks contributed
three assists and was part of a Dukes' defense that recorded five shutouts and
a 1.46 goals-against average.
The team was selected by members of the Virginia Sports Information Directors
Association (VaSID).
Following Virginia's Atlantic Coast Conference championship and a run to the
NCAA Tournament's round of 16, the Cavaliers took three of VaSID's top honors.
MAC Hermann Trophy finalist Caroline Miller was named Player of the Year,
freshman Makenzy Doniak was selected Rookie of the Year and head coach Steve
Swanson was voted Coach of the Year. Radford's
Che' Brown was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year.
Miller, the 2012 ACC Offensive Player of the Year and the program's first
Hermann finalist, set single-season school records with 20 goals and 47 points.
Doniak posted 10 goals and eight assists for 28 points.
Swanson guided the Cavaliers to an 18-5-1
mark and their second conference championship in program history.
Brown, the Big South Defensive Player of
the Year, concluded her junior campaign as the program's all-time leader in
shutouts (27). The NSCAA All-Region
selection claimed the Big South's and school's single season shutout record
with 13. Brown led the league and ranked
among the NCAA leaders in save percentage (.880) and goals-against average
(0.63).
