Courtesy:JMUSports.com Release:12/20/2013

The James Madison men’s basketball team will travel to Richmond to face Hampton in the Governor’s Holiday Hoops Classic on Saturday, December 21st at 3 p.m. The game will be the final game of the team’s eight-game stretch of games away from Harrisonburg.

The game features Madison’s return to the Richmond Coliseum for the first time since capturing the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association championship in March. The event is a doubleheader of state hoops action as VCU and Virginia Tech are scheduled to follow at 5:30 p.m. Both games will be televised nationally on NBC Sports Network.

In their last outing, the Dukes (3-9) fell to UNCG 78-65 on Wednesday. JMU came out on top after the first half, leading 42-36 at the break, but the Spartans came in hot during the second to bounce back and reclaim the lead. UNCG held JMU scoreless for six minutes while scoring seven to make the game 69-59. Madison was unable to come within eight for the remainder of the game.

Graduate student Andrey Semenov became the 27th player in JMU history to reach 1,000 career points with a jump shot at the twelve and a half minute mark. Sophomore guard Ron Curry tallied 23 points and four rebounds and was the only JMU player to reach double-digits in the game. Curry is the third different JMU player to reach 20 points in a game this season.

In its last game, Hampton suffered a 69-67 overtime loss to Northern Kentucky, snapping the team’s three-game win streak. Sophomore guard Deron Powers led the Pirates with 16 points and five assists, while senior forward Du'Vaughn Maxwell contributed 14 points and six rebounds.

JMU will be the second CAA team Hampton faces this season. The Pirates played William and Mary in the season opener, withstanding a run late in the game to defeat the Tribe 77-69.

When the two teams met last season, JMU fell 69-65 in a tough loss against the Pirates. After opening the game with an 8-2 run, the Dukes held a one-point lead at the half. Early after the break, JMU tied the game twice, but a 14-2 run with two minutes remaining wasn’t enough to match Hampton’s 9-0 and 13-4 runs. Rayshawn Goins led the Dukes with 16 points and 12 boards, while Devon Moore and Andre Nation scored 13 points apiece.

Following the Governor’s Holiday Hoops Classic, the Dukes will host Ball State at the JMU Convocation Center on December 30th at 8 p.m. in their first home contest since Nov. 19.
