Men's Golf Ninth Through 36 Holes of Golf Galaxy VCU Shootout

MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. – The James Madison men’s golf team improved from the first to second round today and is in ninth at the 2013 Golf Galaxy VCU Shootout, Sept. 23. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by VCU, is being played at the Hermitage Country Club (Par 72 - 6,955 yards) in Manakin-Sabot, Va.

The Dukes were in 10th after the morning round at 18-over 306 but improved 17 shots in the afternoon round with a 1-over 289 to improve to ninth at 19-over 595. The gap has closed as there are just nine shots from fifth to ninth. Virginia Tech is the 36-hole leader at 9-under 567, two shots ahead of Iowa State at 7-under 569. Richmond is currently third at 4-over 580 with Radford in fourth at 6-over 582. Host VCU and Old Dominion are tied for fifth at 10-over 586.

Freshman Ryan Cole is the top Duke at 3-under 141, tied for second with Virginia Tech’s Bryce Chalkley and Collin Foster of Iowa State four shots behind leader Scott Vincent of Virginia Tech. After a 2-over 74 in the morning round that included four birdies with three in the final seven holes, Cole rode the momentum to four birdies in the first five holes of the afternoon and posted six birdies and just one bogey for a 5-under 67.

Freshman Poom Pattaropong is next in a tie for 25th as he also improved significantly from the morning’s 5-over 77 to a 2-under 70 in the afternoon, with four birdies in the last five holes, for a total of 3-over 147. Junior Jon Weiss is tied for 45th at 8-over 152, while junior Trey Smith is at 11-over 155, tied for 59th. Senior Ben Firebaugh rounds out the team scoring at 17-over 161, tied for 70th. Playing as an individual, sophomore Chris Kapsak is tied for 59th with Smith at 11-over 155.

The Dukes will play the final round of the tournament with Maryland and UNCG, starting off No. 9 in the shotgun start at 8:45 a.m.
