GREENVILLE, N.C., Sept. 20, 2013 – The James Madison men’s tennis team opened the fall season at the East Carolina University Fall Shootout on Friday, receiving a win in singles play from sophomore Maxi Branth (Stockholm, Sweden/Tullinge Gymnasium).
Branth, who finished 9-14 in singles play as a freshman, defeated Richmond junior Dylan Trent 6-2, 6-1. Trent has posted a winning record in each of his two seasons as a starter for the Spiders. Branth and Trent are competing in the Gold Pod in the three-day event.
Also competing in the Gold Pod for the Dukes is Brett Moorhead (Midlothian, Va./Cosby). The freshman hung tough with East Carolina junior Damien Brenard before falling 7-5, 6-3.
Sophomore Robert Stirling and freshmen Alex Berdnikoff (Calgary, Alberta/Edge School for Athletes), Niels Kathol (Bonn, Germany/Collegium Josephinum Bonn), Miljan Ruzic (Sydney, Australia/St. Euphemia College), Sebastian Salinas (Merida, Mexico/Preparatoria Abierta SEP) and Mason Smith (Norfolk, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate School) also competed in the event Friday and will continue play on Saturday.
