HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 20, 2013 – Knee deep in the middle of preseason, sometimes it’s good to step away for some healthy competition off the pitch.

The James Madison women’s soccer team took the afternoon of August 14 to do just that as the Dukes hosted their own field day.  They spent the afternoon at Purcell Park competing against one another in a series of seven events to earn bragging rights.

Redshirt junior defender Sam Lofton (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain), a member of the winning team, described the event as something that represents who JMU women’s soccer is as a team.

“We all had a lot of fun, a lot of great times, a lot of laughter.  It just shows that we’re a team and we’re not afraid to be silly,” Lofton explained with a grin.  “We’ve had a lot of sessions, and we’ve been going really hard, so this was just a chance to kind of relax and let some energy off and get closer as a team.”

Throughout the afternoon, the teams competed in seven different events including a toy-army man search, a portrait-drawing contest of head coach David Lombardo and a race to see who could complete three word-search puzzles the fastest.  Events then shifted more to the physical side with an egg-in-spoon race, pass the lifesaver battle, a three-legged race and a water-balloon toss.

“We do field day because we like to find opportunities for the whole team to bond together and, being that we’re a sports team, competition is usually a great kind of avenue for that to happen,” remarked assistant coach Rachel Chupein“We’ve been doing them for the last six or seven years, and we change it every year…we keep going back to it because the girls really seem to buy into it.”

The team capped off the afternoon with a water-balloon fight, with assistant coach Scott Gerseny serving as the primary target.
