Men's Golf In Second Through 36 Holes of CAA Championship

SOUTHPORT, N.C. - The James Madison men's golf team improved by nine shots in the second round and moved up two slots to second after Day Two of the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship, April 27. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at The Reserve Club at St. James Plantation (Par 72 - 7,069 yards) in Southport, N.C., with the tournament victor getting the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.

Madison improved nine shots to a 9-over 297 for the second 18 and is now at 27-over 603 in second place. However, UNCW made a major move with a tournament-best 5-under 283 in its second round and is now at 12-over 588, 15 shots ahead of the Dukes. William & Mary is in third at 34-over 610, with Drexel (614) and Towson (616) rounding out the top five teams.

Madison is led by seniors Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and Rich Leeper (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro), who are tied for fifth at 4-over 148, after Leeper posted a 1-over 73 in the second round and Vince had a 4-over 74. Leeper was solid with three birdies and four bogeys, while Vince was steady with one birdie and 15 pars on his round. Junior Tucker Koch (Malvern, Pa./Malvern Prep) and freshman Connor Walters (Salem, Va./North Cross) are tied for 16th at 12-over 156 after Walters had a 4-over 76 and Koch a 7-over 79. Sophomore Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) improved his day by 12 shots after the opening round, posting a 2-over 74 and is now in 25th. 

UNCW's Payne McLeod and Josh Woodfox each posted a 5-under 67 in the second round to lead the Seahawks to the top of the leaderboard. McLeod is now the individual leader at 4-under 140, four shots ahead of Alex Hicks of William & Mary at even-par 144 and five ahead of teammate Woodfox in thir.d

Madison will play with UNCW and William & Mary in the final round, starting off No. 1 at 8:45 a.m.
