HARRISONBURG, Va., April 11, 2013 - James Madison volleyball worked with the Ruby Slippers program at Skyline Middle School on Monday. Ruby Slippers is a weekly after school program that targets fourth and fifth grade girls at three local schools.
Each week the time is split between academic work and learning a life skill.
“I helped a student out with her math homework which she wanted to finish. By working through it together, she seemed to really understand what we worked on and had a sense of accomplishment,” said sophomore Martha Stewart.
This week’s life skill was spa day. Together the players and girls made a scrub. Other life skills the program has emphasized in the past include self-esteem, etiquette and how to make good choices.
Due to the program’s success, next year the Ruby Slippers program will be changing its name and will include both girls and boys at local schools.
“It always feels great to help others succeed. We got to provide them with a little advice on how to achieve whatever they want to do in life,” said Stewart.
