James Madison will play just its third true road game of the season when the Dukes open a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series on Friday at George Mason. Friday’s game will be at 3 p.m. with Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
JMU recently ended a 16-game home stand with a 10-7 loss at Maryland on Tuesday. The Dukes opened the season with a pair of games against Coastal Carolina, one away and one neutral, meaning that this weekend will be the first true weekend road series of the season.
The Dukes (11-8) sit second in the CAA entering the weekend with a 4-1 mark, a half game back of 5-1 Georgia State, which is not eligible for the CAA Championship due to the school leaving the CAA for the Sun Belt Conference. GMU sits in a tie for sixth at 3-3 and an overall mark of 10-10.
Madison has put up some impressive early offensive numbers, ranking third in the nation with a .337 batting average and fifth with 8.8 runs per game. The Dukes also sit in the top 30 for runs (159), hits (214), doubles (42) triples (12). They are fourth in the country with a .493 slugging percentage and sixth with a .427 on-base percentage.
Mason has won its last three games with a midweek 5-4 home win over Radford along with taking the final two of three games against Northeastern, both 3-2. The Patriots will play their eighth straight home game through Sunday’s finale.
The Patriots have seen a significant offensive boost from community college transfer Tucker Tobin, who is hitting .440 with eight doubles, two triples and six home runs in 20 games. Blaise Fernandez is hitting .375 with a team-best 10 doubles.
JMU leads the all-time series 59-47, though the series has been mostly even of late, splitting the last 12 games with six wins apiece. Last year, GMU claimed two of three games in Harrisonburg in late April, winning 3-2 and 6-5 while JMU won the middle game 5-2. This year’s series will be the fifth time in the last seven years that the teams meet in Fairfax.
