James Madison men’s basketball will face Northeastern for the second time this season when the Dukes travel to Boston on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game at Matthews Arena.
In their last game, the Dukes snapped a four-game losing streak with a 58-56 victory over the College of Charleston, improving to 7-13 overall and 2-4 in CAA play. In the game’s opening minutes, both teams exchanged a series of 6-0 runs, resulting in the Cougars obtaining the early 12-6 lead. JMU then proceeded to double Charleston’s scoring the remainder of the half to have the 28-23 advantage at the break. CofC tied the game near the halfway mark of the second half, but 10 straight points by freshman guard Jackson Kent put JMU on top for the remainder of the game.
Kent, who was selected as the CAA Rookie Player of the Week for his performance, led the Dukes with 17 points and five rebounds. Sophomore guards Andre Nation and Ron Curry also posted double-figures with Nation scoring 15 in addition to six boards, three assists and two blocks while Curry added 12 points, three assists and a steal.
In their last outing, the Huskies (7-14, 4-3 CAA) rallied from behind to defeat Hofstra 70-57, marking their third win in four games. After trailing the entire game, Northeastern scored 10 consecutive points with 15 minutes remaining to take its first lead of the night. NU then proceeded to outscore Hofstra 32-13 within the game’s final 15 minutes to claim the victory. Junior guard Demetrius Pollard led all players with 25 points to go with six assists and two steals. Junior forward Scott Eatherton, CAA Co-Player of the Week and the nation’s leader in double-doubles, added 18 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore guard David Walker accumulated an additional 10 points and three assists.
When JMU and NU met earlier this season in a rematch of last year’s CAA Championship, NU took home the 56-52 victory. The Huskies grabbed command with the early 10-0 lead and held the Dukes off for the rest of the game. The Dukes put together a second-half rally but never got closer than one point. Nation led all players with 16 points and five rebounds, while sophomore guard Charles Cooke contributed 14 for JMU. Eatherton led Northeastern with 14 points, in addition to 12 points each from Pollard and Walker.
The Dukes will return home to face William and Mary following their game against Northeastern. Play is scheduled for Sunday, February 2nd at 2:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on NBC Sports Network.
