Hitchens A Finalist for JMU Male Athlete of the Year

HARRISONBURG, Va., April 23, 2012 - Men's basketball senior guard Humpty Hitchens (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) was a finalist for Male Athlete of the Year at James Madison as the school held its annual athletics recognition banquet on Monday evening.

Baseball catcher Jake Lowery was selected as the JMU Male Athlete of the Year.  The other finalists along with Hitchens included soccer midfielder/forward Paul Wyatt and football running back Dae'Quan Scott.

For the 2011-12 season, Hitchens was a Third Team All-Conference selection in the Colonial Athletic Association and an honorable mention All-State pick. He averaged 14,9 points per game overall and 14.2 in the CAA in JMU's 12-20 season.  He shot 42 percent from the field and 39 percent from the arc, which ranked 44th nationally.  Hitchens led the CAA and ranked 30th nationally with 2.73 made three-pointers per game.  Additionally, he ranked seventh in the league in scoring, 13th in field-goal percentage, sixth with 3.7 assists per game and first in minutes per game with 36.5. 

The 447 points scored as a senior represented the best year of Hitchen's career.  He finished with 740 points in two seasons at JMU after transferring from Akron, where he dropped 586 points in two seasons for a career total of 1,326.  He also had 346 assists in his four-year collegiate career with a high of 111 as a senior.  He teamed with junior guard Devon Moore (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) to form just the fifth set of teammates in JMU history to each post 100 assists in a season.
