Hitchens was one of 15 state players honored among the 2012 award winners.  Virginia forward Mike Scott was named VaSID Player of the Year.  Anthony Evans of Norfolk State was named the VaSID Coach of the Year after directing the Spartans to their first-ever NCAA Tournament win.  Richmond freshman guard Kendall Anthony was tabbed Rookie of the Year.

The 447 points scored as a senior represented the best year of Hitchen's career.  He finished with 740 points in two seasons at JMU after transferring from Akron, where he dropped 586 points in two seasons for a career total of 1,326.  He also had 346 assists in his four-year collegiate career with a high of 111 as a senior.  He teamed with junior guard Devon Moore (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) to form just the fifth set of teammates in JMU history to each post 100 assists in a season.
