RICHMOND, Va., Dec. 16, 2013 – James Madison women’s basketball senior guard Kirby Burkholder (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) was named the Colonial Athletic Association co-Player of the Week as announced by the league on Monday. This is the second time this season the Bridgewater, Va., native has claimed the conference’s weekly honor.
Burkholder earned Player of the Week accolades after being named the co-Most Valuable Player of the St. John’s Chartwells Holiday Classic over the weekend. The senior led her team to wins over Prairie View A&M and St. John’s by scoring 34 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in 66 minutes played over two games. She added four steals, two assists and a block.
In Madison’s win over Prairie View A&M, Burkholder tied for a team-high 16 points on 5-of-14 shooting, including 3-for-9 from 3-point range. She snared seven rebounds to go with two assists, two steals and a block. She followed that up with a game-high 18 points, six rebounds and two steals in Madison’s win over tournament-host St. John’s.
This season, the Preseason CAA Player of the Year, is averaging 18.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game while playing a team-best 32.8 minutes per session. She has hit on 34 percent of her 3-pointers and is 46-53 (86.8 percent) from the free throw line.
Drexel’s Rachel Pearson shared co-Player of the Week with Burkholder after also sharing co-MVP honors at the Holiday Classic. Her teammate, Sarah Curran was named the Rookie of the Week.
The Dukes return home following a six-game road trip on Wednesday as they host Vanderbilt at the JMU Convocation Center at 7 p.m.
