Volleyball Starts Road Trip With 3-0 Defeat at UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C., Oct. 18, 2013 – Freshman right side Janey Goodman (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) connected on a match-high 13 kills on 28 attack attempts, but James Madison hit .107 as a team as it fell to UNCW, 3-0, in its first road match of Colonial Athletic Association play at Hanover Hall in Wilmington, N.C., Friday evening.

UNCW won by set scores of 26-24, 25-20, 25-16 to improve to 13-7 overall and 2-4 in the CAA. JMU dropped to 8-11 overall and 3-3 in the league.

Goodman’s 13 kills came on .393 hitting as she committed two errors in 28 attacks. The reigning CAA Rookie of the Week added three blocks and three digs in the match. Fellow rookie outside hitter Kate Whitmire (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) added 10 kills on .231 hitting and two digs while junior middle blocker Lizzy Briones (Siloam Springs, Ark./Siloam Springs) added five kills and three blocks.

Sophomore libero MacKenzie Kleespies (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) led all players with 19 digs, adding four assists. Redshirt junior setter Kristi Richardson (Glen Allen, Va./Hermitage) combined with sophomore Sarah Patterson (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) for 29 assists, four digs and three blocks.

UNCW right side hitter Christi Laite led her team with 12 kills on .429 hitting while five other players finished with four or more kills for the Seahawks. Outside hitter Nicole Lott contributed six kills, five digs, three blocks and two service aces. Outside hitter Morgan Kline added four kills, eight digs and three service aces. Middle blocker Meredith Peacock supplied eight blocks while setter Alyssa Desjardins finished with a double-double with 14 digs and 12 assists.

Wilmington outhit JMU .167 to .107 and collected 10 blocks and 11 service aces to Madison’s six and four, respectively.

The Seahawks came out firing in set one, building leads of 6-2 and 10-6. They eventually stretched the lead to as much as six at 23-17, but the Dukes responded with a 7-0 run to reach the match’s first set point with a 24-23 lead. A kill by UNCW’s Victoria Phillips ended the Madison run before back-to-back kills by Laite finished off the set in UNCW’s favor.

Set two was again all Wilmington early as they sprinted out to a 14-4 advantage. JMU battled back to cut the deficit to four at 16-12, but UNCW responded with a 3-0 run after a timeout. JMU got as close as three points with another 4-0 run to cut the lead to 22-19, but was unable to complete the comeback, falling 25-20.

For the third time in as many sets, UNCW took control early winning 12 of the first 16 points. Goodman helped spur a 7-1 JMU run, connecting on three kills to cut the lead to two points, however Wilmington went on to win 13 of the final 19 points to finish off the match.

JMU continues its four match road swing with a trip to South Carolina as it takes on the College of Charleston at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
