Huntington, W.Va., Aug. 30, 2013 - Freshman midfielder Allison Bortell scored with seven minutes left in regulation  to lead the James Madison women's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Marshall on Friday night.

The Dukes improved to 2-1, defeating a Thundering Herd team that won its first two games by a combined score of 6-0.

Bortell, who became the third freshman to score in the Dukes' first three games of the season, tallied the game-winner off a corner kick from fellow freshman Allie Bunner

For the third straight game JMU scored first. After a scoreless first half the Dukes took a 1-0 lead on an own goal in the 57th minute.

Erin Simmons responded for Marshall with a game-tying goal on a penalty kick in the 76th minute. The score remained 1-1 until Bortell's game-winner late in the game.

Ellen Forrest made two saves to pick up her second win of the season in goal for the Dukes. The Thundering Herd's Lizzie Kish made three saves in a losing effort.

JMU will make the trip to Tennessee for a non-conference game on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Volunteers are coming off a come-from-behind 2-1 win over 17th-ranked UCF on Friday night.
