Women's Golf Finishes Fourth at JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational

ORANGE PARK, Fla. - The James Madison University women's golf team battled windy conditions in the final day for its first top-five finish at its own home tournament and of the 2012-13 season, finishing fourth at the 2013 JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational, March 8-10. The three-day, 54-hole event was played at Eagle Landing at Oakleaf Plantation (Par 72 - 6,282 yards) in Orange Park, Fla., just outside of Jacksonville.

In the windy, fast conditions, the Dukes fought to shoot a 22-over 310 to finish at 39-over 903 in fourth place, six shots behind East Carolina in third at 33-over 897. Campbell took team honors for the third time in tournament history with a tournament-low 287 in the final round to finish at 6-over 870. Mississippi State rallied in the final round with a 5-over 293 to move up to third at 27-over 891, while East Carolina placed third at 33-over 897. East Tennessee State and Chattanooga tied for fifth at 40-over 904.

 Freshman Karishma Thiagaraj (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) had her first-ever collegiate top-20 finish, tying for 16th at 7-over 223, while junior Ginger Mak (North Point, Hong Kong/The International School of Macao) and sophomore Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield) also finished in the top 20, tying for 19th at 10-over 226. Sophomore Maria Andrea Legaspi (Quezon City, Philippines/St. Paul College-Pasig) tied for 30th at 12-over 228 while sophomore Nikola Wessels (Muenster, Germany/Marienschule Muenster) finished 92nd at 37-over 253. Playing as an individual, freshman Kelsey Solan (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) tied for 93rd at 38-over 254.

East Carolina's Frida Gustaffson Sprang won from wire-to-wire, finishing at 4-under 212, three shots better than co-runner ups Lisbeth Brooks of Campbell and Mississippi State's Ally McDonald at 1-under 215. Brooks shot a 5-under 67 in the final round, the low individual 18 of the tournament.

The Dukes will return to the course Monday-Tuesday, March 25-26 at the John Kirk Panther Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Georgia State, will be played at Eagle's Landing Country Club in Atlanta, Ga.
