WILMINGTON, N.C., Oct. 28, 2012 – Freshmen middle blocker MacKenzie Kleespies (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) collected 11 kills and a team-best 22 digs in a losing effort as UNCW earned 3-1 win over the James Madison volleyball team at Hanover Hall on Sunday afternoon.
JMU lost its second-straight game to drop to 11-13 on the season and 4-5 in Colonial Athletic Association play. UNCW improved to 11-14 and 3-6 in the conference.
Kleespies hit .189 for the match, committing just four errors in 37 attempts. She added three blocks and three assists on the day. Senior outside hitter Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) had a team-best 14 kills and 12 digs to record her team-leading 12th double-double of the season. Sophomore middle blocker Lizzy Briones (Siloam Springs, Ark./Siloam Springs) contributed 13 kills on .290 hitting to go with three blocks. Freshman outside hitter Meghan Niski (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) collected seven kills on .300 hitting, and had 10 digs and five assists.
Senior setter Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) handed out 21 assists and had 11 digs while freshman setter Sarah Patterson (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) led the team with five blocks to go with 25 assists, six kills and three service aces. Freshman libero Patreece Spence (Wilmington, Del./Archmere Academy) made her first career start for the Dukes. She recorded a career-high 13 digs and had her first career kill.
Outside hitters Morgan Kline and Christi Laite led the Seahawk attack with 16 kills each. Kline committed just three errors for a .289 attack percentage and had 12 digs while Laite supplied five digs, three blocks and an assist. Middle Blocker McKenzie Keightley had six kills with no errors for a .375 attack percentage and added a team-high two blocks. Setter Victoria Phillips spread out 28 assists and picked up 23 digs. Libero Haley Collins led all players with 24 digs.
UNCW outhit JMU .208 to .205 and had a 7.5-6 lead in blocks. The teams tied with 83 digs each and the Dukes recorded four service aces to two for the Seahawks.
JMU returns to play next weekend as it wraps up the road portion of its schedule with a trip to Fairfax, Va. The Dukes play at George Mason on Friday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.
