Volleyball Falls To CSU Northridge to Close West Coast Trip

LONG Beach, Calif., Sept. 1, 2012 – The James Madison volleyball team wrapped up its three-game trip to the West Coast with a 3-0 loss at the hands of Cal St. Northridge in the final game of the Long Beach State Mizuno Invitational in Long Beach, Calif., on Saturday. 

CSUN went to 1-1 in the tournament to improve to 3-2 on the season. JMU dropped to 1-5 on the year. 

Three different players collected at least seven kills for the Dukes led by nine on .133 hitting from senior outside hitter Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant). Erb added 13 digs and a block assist. Sophomore middle blocker Lizzy Briones (Siloam Springs, Ark./Siloam Springs) added eight kills and a team-high four blocks while freshman outside hitter MacKenzie Kleespies (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) contributed seven kills, 15 digs, two blocks and two assists in her first career start. 

Defensively, Madison received 16 digs from junior libero Katie Daorai (Tampa, Fla./Plant) and two blocks from freshman middle blocker Sarah Delaney (Herndon, Va./South Lakes). Senior setter Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) added 22 assists, seven digs, three kills and a service ace. 

The Matadors were paced by outside hitter Britney Graff with 12 kills on .273 hitting. She also picked up 12 digs, a service ace and an assist. Outside hitter Mahina Haina had a .310 attack percentage, finishing with 11 kills, six digs and two blocks while middle blocker Cieana Stinson chipped in with eight kills and a match-high nine blocks. Outside hitter Monica McFarland led all players with 18 digs. Setter Sydney Gedryn added 36 assists, 11 digs, six blocks and two kills. 

CSU Northridge outhit the Dukes .189 to .118 on the strength of a 10-6 advantage in blocks. The Matadors finished with a 65-percent sideout percentage against just 54-percent for the Dukes. 

JMU returns to the Eastern Time Zone next weekend as it travels to Baltimore, Md., for the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament at Maryland, Baltimore County. The Dukes are schedule to play Howard, UMBC and Robert Morris in the two-day, three-match event.
