HARRISONBURG, Va., April 23, 2012 – James Madison volleyball’s Natalie Abel (Washington, Pa./Trinity) was a finalist for JMU’s 2011-12 Female Athlete of the Year Award.
The award winners and finalists were recognized Monday evening at the annual JMU student-athlete awards banquet.
Abel was a First Team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection in 2011 after helping lead the Dukes to a 20-11 overall record and its second consecutive appearances in the CAA Championship semifinals. She was named the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) State Player of the Year and was a First Team All-State selection. In 2011, she led the team in kills with 350 and finished second on the team with 376 digs. She also added 37 assists, 36 blocks and 27 service aces in 31 matches started. Abel also recorded a team-high 15 double-doubles and was the only player to record a 20/20 performance with 21 kills and 20 digs against George Mason. In Madison match against Davidson, Abel set a new career-high with 30 digs in a JMU four-set win.
Heading into her senior season, Abel ranks 9th on the school’s all-time digs list with 982.
