Volleyball Drops Road Decision, 3-1, at UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C., Oct. 28, 2011 – Sophomore middle blocker Kelly Maguire (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) collected 12 kills and a match-high five blocks, but UNCW hit .259 as a team to earn a 3-1 win over the James Madison volleyball team at Hanover Hall in Wilmington, N.C., on Friday night. 

The Seahawks won by set scores of 25-21, 17-25, 25-15, 25-17. The loss drops JMU to 17-7 overall and 7-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association. UNCW improves to 10-16 and 3-6 in league play. 

Maguire committed just four errors in 22 attempts for a .364 attack percentage and had a team-best 15 points. Senior outside hitter Holly Wall (Kaukauna, Wisc./Kaukauna) and redshirt junior outside hitter Natalie Abel (Washington, Pa./Trinity) each contributed a double-double. Wall had a team-best 13 kills and 14 digs while Abel had 11 kills and 10 digs. Junior outside hitter Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla/Plant) and sophomore libero Katie Daorai (Tampa, Fla./Plant) were in double figures in digs with 10 each. 

Setters Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) and Kristi Richardson (Glen Allen, Va./Hermitage) combined for 37 assists, nine digs, three blocks, two kills and a service ace. Freshman middle blocker Lizzy Briones (Siloam Springs, Ark./Siloam Springs) chipped in two blocks and eight kills for nine points. 

UNCW featured a balanced attack with five different players recording at least seven kills. Courtney Porter and Christi Laite led the way with 14 kills each with Laite adding 11 digs, three aces and two blocks. Jennifer Mallard also added a double-double, contributing 11 kills and 17 digs while libero Haley Collins led all players with 18 digs. McKenzie Keightley and Morgan Kline had seven kills each and Keightley led the team with five blocks. 

The Seahawks outhit the Dukes .259 to .209 led by 31 assists from setter Natalie LaHaie. They also won the digs battle 64-56 and had five aces to Madison’s three. JMU collected eight blocks to just six for UNCW. 

The Dukes return to the court on Sunday in Atlanta, Ga., as they take on Georgia State to close out their four-game road trip.
