RICHMOND, Va., Oct., 24, 2011 – James Madison volleyball redshirt junior outside hitter Natalie Abel (Washington, Pa./Trinity) was named the Colonial Athletic Association co-Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season on Monday after helping lead JMU to a pair of road sweeps at VCU and William & Mary last weekend.
Abel recorded double-doubles in each of the Dukes’ matches over the weekend, giving her a team-best 12 this season. On Friday, she recorded 13 kills and 11 digs to lead the team in both categories against the Rams while also adding three aces, an assist and a block. The Washington, Pa., native committed just three errors in 26 attempts to finish with a .385 attack percentage. Against William & Mary, she added 12 kills, 10 digs, an assist, a block and hit .345 in three sets played.
For the week, Abel collected 25 kills on .364 hitting, 21 digs, three aces, two assists and two blocks. This season, she is leading the team with 3.05 kills per set and ranks second in digs at 3.31 per set.
Abel shared the offensive honor with Towson’s Aubrey Kirven. Kirven’s teammate Paige Sekerak was named the Defensive Player of the Week while Northeastern’s Natalia Skiba took home Rookie of the Week honors. Abel also won the offensive honor on Sept. 6 and Sept 12.
The Dukes continue their four-game road trip as they travel to UNCW and Georgia State this weekend.
