HARRISONBURG, Va., Feb. 28, 2011 – The James Madison women’s volleyball team started their preparations for the 2011 season with the start of spring practice today.
“I am looking forward to having the opportunity to compete against some very good programs this spring,” Head Coach Lauren Steinbrecher said. “We are working hard to take our program to the next level and this spring will give us a chance to assess where we are and get ready for a successful 2011 season.”
The Dukes will practice as a team for the next few weeks before heading to Charlottesville, Va. for games against Virginia and Georgetown on March 19. The next weekend, Madison will take part in a tournament at Wake Forest University before closing their spring slate at home against West Virginia.
JMU returns six players who played at least 90 sets from last year’s squad that went 22-8 overall and 10-4 in conference play. Leading the way is sophomore Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) a Second Team All-CAA selection and redshirt sophomore Natalie Abel (Washington, Pa./Trinity) a Third Team honoree. Also back is All-Rookie selection Katie Daorai (Tampa, Fla./Plant), juniors Holly Wall (Kaukauna, Wisc./Kaukauna) and Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) and sophomore Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian).
Last season, the Dukes put together one of the best turnarounds in the nation as they increased their winning percentage by .366 and their win total by 11. Those numbers were good for fourth and sixth in the nation, respectively.
