FAIRFAX, Va., January 25, 2013 -- Sophomore Nicole Gilbert (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) placed third in the pentathlon at the Patriot Games to lead the James Madison track & field team on day one of the weekend competition.
Gilbert posted 3,132 points in her first pentathlon, putting her fifth all-time in JMU history. Her best finish came in the long jump, as she launched herself 5.2 meters for 614 points. She placed fourth in the shot put competition with a toss of 10.07 meters and in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:37.08, good for 603 points.
The sophomore's highest point total came from a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, when she crossed the line in 9.52 seconds to earn 804 points. Gilbert rounded out her day with 1.46-meter high jump, earning 577 points and eighth place.
The Dukes also sent athletes to Blacksburg, Va., to compete in the first day of the Hokie Invitational. Sophomore Destiny Simmons (Stuanton, Va./Robert E. Lee) posted a 41.00-second, 300-meter dash to finish in eighth place. Freshman Kalyn Simmons (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park) and junior Ashley Williams (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) placed just a beat behind her, crossing the line in 42.33 seconds and 42.48 seconds, respectively, to take the 13th and 14th spots.
JMU returns to action at both the Patriot Games and Hokie Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 26. Action is set to get underway at 10 a.m. in Fairfax at the Field House and at 11 a.m. in Blacksburg at the Rector Field House.
