RICHMOND, Va. - The Colonial Athletic Association announced Friday afternoon that James Madison cross country senior Katie Gorman (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) has earned the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award for the 2012 cross country season.

One Scholar-Athlete is honored by the league for each of its 22 championship sports, and six were awarded Friday to honor the fall sports.  To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve on their team and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25.  Winners were voted on by the sports information directors at each CAA institution.

Gorman is a senior kinesiology major with a minor in coaching who entered the fall semester with a 3.89 cumulative grade point average.  This season, she won individual titles at the JMU Invitational and Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship to lead the Dukes to team titles at both events.  She also earned her sixth career All-CAA honors with a fourth-place finish in the 2012 CAA Championship race.

During her time at JMU, Gorman has been honored with the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award five times and with JMU Athletic Director Scholar-Athlete honors three times.  She has made the President's List (3.9+) three times and the Dean's List (3.5+) three times.  Following the 2011-12 academic year, she was named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors' Academic All-State team.

Also receiving the Scholar-Athlete Award were William and Mary seniors Alex McGrath (men's cross country) and Mallory Schaffer (women's soccer), Hofstra senior Melissa McCarthy (field hockey), Georgia State junior Chris Locandro (men's soccer) and Towson junior Katy Buck (volleyball).
