RICHMOND, Va., April 12, 2012 - In the first of three straight road matches to end the regular season, the James Madison women's tennis team fell to Richmond 6-1 on Thursday.  The loss dropped the Dukes to 9-5 on the season while Richmond improved to 10-4.

Doubles started off on a bumpy road for the Dukes.  Richmond struck first at the No. 1 position when Helen Cunningham and Alexandra Smyth toppled the Dukes' senior/freshman pair of Kinsey Pate (Matthews, N.C./Butler) and Taylor Pinchoff (Sylvan Lake Mich./West Bloomfield) 8-1.  Madison's junior/sophomore pair of Megan Douglass (Wilton, Conn./St. Luke's) and Ruxandra Andriescu (Brampton, Ontario, Canada/Turner Fenton) battled back at the No. 3 spot, defeating Joanna Matuszczyk and Nil Horoz in a tight one, 8-6, to square up the battle for the point.  However, the Spiders prevailed, winning the doubles point after Melissa Kandinata and Elizabeth Sims snuck past JMU juniors Katherine Bulling (Loveland, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) and Michelle Nguyen (Springfield, Va./South County) 9-8 at the No. 2 position.

Richmond kept the momentum rolling in singles play, taking all but the final match in straight sets.  Kandinata defeated Nguyen, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, and Cunningham topped sophomore Jacqueline Palmucci (Auora, Colo./Cherokee Trail), 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2 to give the Spiders a commanding 3-0 match lead.

Smyth grabbed the decisive fourth point in the No. 5 spot, earning a win over Douglass, 6-3, 6-2.  Sims followed with a 7-6, 6-2, win over Pinchoff in the four hole to extend the Spiders' lead to 5-0.  In No. 6 Horoz ousted Bulling 7-6, 6-3 to set up a possible sweep for Richmond.

Pate, however, spoiled the Spiders' plan.  She earned the point for JMU in the only match that went three sets.  Matuszczyk grabbed the first set, but Pate battled back, earning a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory to end the match.

Madison returns to competition on Saturday in Fairfax, Va.  The Dukes take on the George Mason Patriots in a 1 p.m. contest.
