HARRISONBURG, Va., March 22, 2012 - The James Madison women's tennis team hosts two matches this weekend. The Dukes take on nationally-ranked Division II California (Pa.) on Friday, March 23 and Longwood on Sunday the 25th. Both matches will be played at the Hillside Tennis Courts and are scheduled for 3 p.m. start times.
JMU enters competition with a 7-3 record, including wins in six of its last seven matches. The Dukes are led by juniors Megan Douglass (Wilton, Conn./St. Luke's), Michelle Nguyen (Springfield, Va./South County) and Katherine Bulling (Loveland, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy). Douglass is 7-3 in spring singles play while Nguyen is 7-2 and Bulling is 6-2. Douglass also boasts a 4-1 doubles record when paired with sophomore Ruxandra Andriescu (Brampton, Ontario, Canada/Turner Fenton), while Bulling and Nguyen also hold a 4-1 doubles record as a team.
California (Pa.) enters Friday's matchup at 10-4 on the season following a 6-3 loss to Division III top-ranked Williams College. The Vulcans are ranked No. 10 Nationally in the Division II ITA polls as wells as being ranked No.1 in the Atlantic Region. California (Pa.) has four players ranked in the Atlantic Region's top five as well as three players ranked in the top 31 nationally. Two Vulcans doubles teams are also ranked in the top 12 in the nation.
Longwood is 4-8 on the season coming off a 4-3 loss to Presbyterian. The Lancers have played two matches against similar opponents, falling 4-3 to Old Dominion on Feb. 24 and defeating Norfolk State 7-0 on March 7. In singles play, the Lancers are led by a pair of players with six wins. Malin Allgurin is 6-4 in singles competition while Nicole Parker is 6-5 for Longwood. Parker, when paired with teammate Hannah Hill, also holds the Lancers' best doubles record at 6-3.
Following Sunday's match with the Lancers, the Dukes will travel to Norfolk, Va., for conference matches against Delaware and UNCW on March 30 and 31, respectively.
